When love turns to murder

Sometimes love turns to hate or, even worse, murder. This became a reality in the case of 22-year-old Zimmer Franz Stockreiter. He simply could not cope with the breakup with his great love, Leopoldine R. For weeks after the breakup, he stalked Leopoldine and threatened her with a knife. She then reported Franz, who was remanded in custody for a few hours in April 1974. After his release, Franz had only one goal: he wanted to murder Leopoldine. So on April 12, 1974, he hid in her parents’ barn in Weissenbach an der Triesting in Lower Austria. When Leopoldine’s mother unexpectedly appeared there instead, he killed her with a wooden club. Leopoldine’s mother had previously called for help. Leopoldine heard these cries for help and rushed to the barn, where she met the same fate as her mother. Franz had also killed Leopoldine. Franz then fled on foot, but was arrested by the police in the municipality of Heiligenkreuz. In June 1975, Franz Stockreiter was sentenced to life imprisonment for the double murder at the Wiener Neustadt Regional Court. He was sent to Stein Prison. Due to his increasingly severe delusions, he was transferred to the prison for mentally abnormal offenders in Göllersdorf in 1988. There he underwent therapy and was even granted a total of 194 day releases between 1988 and 1995 to prepare him for his possible release from prison. Franz worked in Göllersdorf as a kind of caretaker, who in March 1995 happened to find some of his prison files in the waste paper, which contained what appeared to be a negative prognosis. Franz believed that he would no longer be released from prison, which led to a violent knee-jerk reaction. Franz locked himself in the garbage room, armed with a chainsaw and a gasoline canister. He demanded to speak to the judge responsible for his release. But his therapist, Veronika Kreuzinger-Hitz, managed to calm Franz down and persuade him to give up. But just two weeks later, on April 4, 1995, Franz lost his temper during a therapy session with Veronika. When Veronika told Franz that she would be leaving the Göllerdorf special prison in a few weeks due to further training, Franz saw red. He grabbed a box cutter he had found in the trash and killed Veronika with it. In December 1995, Franz Stockreiter, who had been close to being released, was sentenced to life imprisonment again by the Korneuburg Regional Court. The murder of the psychotherapist led to a change in focus in the treatment of dangerous offenders at the Göllersdorf prison.
