No smoking

A deeply evil crime took place on January 15, 2016, in an apartment in the Anna-Boschek-Hof residential complex on Davidsgasse in Vienna’s 10th district, Favoriten. There, 72-year-old widow Maria S. was tortured to death. As it later transpired, the elderly woman was a random victim. The perpetrator was 19-year-old Erdem K., a young man of Turkish descent who was training as a chef in a hotel in Vienna’s city center. After lunch, Erdem K. wanted to smoke a cigarette at his brother’s place. At that moment, pensioner Maria S. walked past him on her way to dispose of her trash in the courtyard of the municipal complex. According to the 19-year-old, she had berated him for smoking and called him a “fucking foreigner.” The young man didn’t care and went back to his brother’s apartment, where his brother gave him a new haircut. He then went to the widow’s apartment and when she opened the door, he smoked his cigarette with relish in front of her, which naturally led to an argument. Suddenly, the 19-year-old punched Maria S. in the face. He repeatedly beat the defenseless woman, who fell to the ground. Then, in a frenzy, he smashed flower pots on her head and tried to break her neck. But he did not succeed, so he stabbed the woman with a knife a total of 16 times. He then covered her head with a flower pot because it “looked so disgusting.” After that, he tortured the old woman with lit candles, which he extinguished on her, and a hot iron. As the woman lay dying, he abused her with the stem of a decorative pumpkin. Finally, after more than an hour of torture, he slit her throat. The autopsy revealed that the right carotid artery and the left jugular vein had been completely severed and the skull had been completely shattered. A neighbor had informed the police because she had heard cries for help. But when the patrol car drove through the apartment building, there were no more suspicious noises. No one suspected that Maria S. was desperately fighting for her life at that moment. After the crime, the 19-year-old even took a shower in his murder victim’s apartment and then partied in a nightclub until the early hours of the morning. For this extremely brutal crime, which turned even the judge’s stomach, the 19-year-old was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment for young adults. In addition, the jury court ordered the young man to be committed to an institution for mentally abnormal offenders. According to psychiatrist Karl Dantendorfer, he suffers from a severe personality disorder which, without therapeutic measures after his release, suggests that he will commit further crimes with serious consequences. At the time of the crime, the 19-year-old was found to be fully accountable.
